Three dead, 2 in critical condition in Bulacan water tank explosion

San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan (CNN Philippines, October 6) — At least three were killed and two others are in critical condition after a water district tank burst in San Jose Del Monte in Bulacan north of Metro Manila on Friday, the city mayor said.

San Jose Del Monte Mayor Arthur Robes said a one-year-old child and a 50-year-old police volunteer died from drowning, while a 22-year-old woman died from debris.

He added 44 people were injured in the incident that happened at 3:30 in the morning in Barangay Muzon.

At least 2,000 cubic meters of water, equivalent to more than 9,000 drums, from the 13-meter tank washed out at least 60 houses and damaged a police station.

Robes said all residents were accounted for.

Engineer Loreto Limcolioc, general manager of the San Jose Del Monte water district, said they are still clueless on what caused the explosion.

He added the 7-year structure was regularly maintained.

Authorities are investigating the incident.

Water district officials will meet with the local government engineering team, the construction company, and the contractor of the water tank to find out the cause.

The city disaster risk management office asked residents and motorists not to use their cellphones and avoid smoking in the area as the explosion affected a gasoline station.

The roads from Barangay Muzon heading to Marilao, Bulacan were closed due to the incident.

Classes in all levels in the barangay were suspended.
